The Refugee and Asylum Seeker Youth Holiday program (RAY) abd Homework Club program provide recreational and academic support to newly arrived refugee and asylum seeker children and young people in Melbourne. Ray is run over two days every school holidays and is targeted at newly arrived young people aged 12-25. Activities include trips the zoo, movies and beach, photography, sports, etc.It provides opportunities for these young people who are often socially isolated and financially disadvantaged, to build relationships with other young migrants and young Australian volunteers, take part in fun activities they may not normally have access to and become familiar with the city (e.g. using public transport). All activities are free for participants. The Homework Club program provides one - to one homework help to newly arrived primary scholl students aged 8-12, assisting them to overcome barriers to academic achievement such as interrupted schooling or cultural differences . Red Cross Homework Club programs assist children (upper primary) with homework set by their classroom teacher. The children who attend are often from non English speaking backgrounds and parents find it difficult to assist them with their homework when they themselves do not read and write in English. Homework Clubs are run in two primary schools - Fitzroy & Abbotsford - one afternoon every week durings chool term. Funding will enable us to run more RAY activity days to eextend the program to include the families of newly arrived young people (e.g family activity days) It will also enable us to expand the Homework Club into additional schools and other venues (e.g. libraries, community centres), assisting more children from migrant families.
